I am an Assistant Professor of Korean Linguistics at Dongguk University.
My passion for the Korean language began early in life and led me to pursue a career in studying and teaching Korean linguistics.
I have long been interested in how language reflects thought, culture, and human interaction.
Through the study of Korean, I seek to better understand the Korean language and culture, and ultimately gain deeper insights into human communication and understanding.
My research lies at the intersection of syntax and semantics, with a particular focus on the syntax–semantics interface in Korean.
I am particularly interested in how linguistic meaning is constructed and interpreted in Korean, focusing on modality, tense and aspect, discourse interpretation, and expressive meaning.
A central goal of my research is to investigate Korean language understanding from both theoretical and empirical perspectives.
More recently, I have become interested in AI-based approaches to Korean linguistics, particularly how large language models (LLMs) understand, generate, and structure Korean language.
I love being a teacher.
At the same time, I often feel that teaching is also a process of being taught.
My students—both undergraduate and graduate—continually challenge me to rethink familiar questions and explore Korean language in new ways.
Their curiosity and thoughtful questions often push me to think more deeply about language, meaning, and communication than I would on my own.
My journey into Korean linguistics began with a deep love for the Korean language.
As a student at Sogang University, I had the privilege of learning syntax from Professor Chung-Hoon Lee, whose classes taught me not only how language is structured, but also how careful and rigorous thinking can deepen our understanding of human language.
His encouragement to build strong foundations regardless of circumstances has remained an important principle throughout my academic life.
